Whether you're a tennis fan or a homeowner wanting to add value to your property, building a court is exciting but challenging. Before starting, it helps to know the average price and size of a tennis court. This guide covers the key steps, costs and recommended sizes.

Factors that impact court construction cost

Excavation & site preparation

Grading, levelling and drainage are needed before construction. Property topography, accessibility and existing landscaping all affect cost and complexity.

Surface material selection

  • Hard court: Concrete or asphalt - durable with low maintenance, despite higher installation expense.
  • Clay court: Favoured by top players for its distinctive play, but needs frequent watering and rolling.
  • Artificial grass: Low-maintenance with excellent shock absorption and customisable features; higher install cost offset by long-term savings.

Other costs to consider

  • Fencing & lighting for privacy, safety and night play - costs vary with material, height and local requirements.
  • Added amenities such as seating, shade structures or exercise walls.

Standard tennis court sizes

A standard tennis court is rectangular: 36 ft wide (10.97 m) and 78 ft long (23.77 m). The space around the court for free movement is called run-off.
